For the cake:

  • 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 and 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee, cooled

For the chocolate ganache:

  • 8 ounces dark chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1 cup heavy cream

For garnish (optional):

  • Powdered sugar
  • Fresh berries


  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan, tapping out any excess flour.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the sugar and eggs together until pale and fluffy.
  4. Gradually add the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the sugar-egg mixture, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients in three batches, alternating with the cooled brewed coffee. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined after each addition.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  8. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then, transfer the cake to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. While the cake is cooling, prepare the chocolate ganache. Place the finely chopped dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl.
  10. In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it just starts to simmer. Pour the hot cream over the chopped chocolate and let it sit for 1-2 minutes.
  11. Stir the chocolate and cream together until the mixture is smooth and shiny. Let the ganache cool slightly to thicken.
  12. Once the cake has cooled, pour the chocolate ganache over the top, allowing it to drip down the sides for an elegant finish.
  13. If desired, dust the cake with powdered sugar and garnish with fresh berries before serving.
